Face Shape Calculator for Men
Find your face shape, then get a beard style
that works with it — not against it.
How to Use the Face Shape Calculator
Your beard should suit your face, not just grow out of it. The right beard shape can sharpen your jaw, balance your features, add structure, or soften hard lines. Use this face shape calculator to find out whether your face is oval, round, square, oblong, heart, diamond or triangle — then use that result to choose a beard style that actually works for you.
Measure four simple areas of your face: forehead, cheekbones, jaw and face length. Once you have your result, you will have a better idea of how to shape, trim and maintain your beard with purpose. No guessing. No gimmicks. Just a cleaner way to build your grooming ritual.
How to Measure Your Face Shape
To get the most accurate result, use a flexible tape measure and stand in front of a mirror. Keep your face relaxed, look straight ahead, and measure in centimetres or inches — just use the same unit for every measurement.
Forehead Width
Measure across the widest part of your forehead. This is usually halfway between your eyebrows and your hairline. Start at one side of your forehead and measure straight across to the other side.
Why it matters:
Your forehead width helps identify whether your face is wider at the top, balanced through the middle, or narrower compared to your jaw.
Cheekbone Width
Measure from the outer edge of one cheekbone to the outer edge of the other. The cheekbones are usually the widest point of the face, sitting just below the outer corners of your eyes.
Why it matters:
Cheekbone width is one of the biggest clues in identifying face shape. It helps separate oval, round, diamond and heart-shaped faces.
Jaw Width
Measure from the tip of your chin to the point below your ear where your jaw angles upward. Then double that number to estimate your full jaw width.
Why it matters:
Your jaw width affects how strong, square or tapered your lower face appears. This is especially important when choosing a beard style, because the beard sits directly around the jawline.
Face Length
Measure from the centre of your hairline down to the tip of your chin. Keep the tape measure straight and vertical.
Why it matters:
Face length shows whether your face is short, balanced or long. This helps decide whether your beard should add length, reduce length, create width, or sharpen the lower face.
What Face Shape Do I Have?
Your face shape is based on the relationship between your forehead, cheekbones, jawline and face length. Most men fall into one of seven common face shapes: oval, round, square, oblong, heart, diamond or triangle.
No face shape is better than another. The point is simple: once you understand the structure of your face, you can choose a beard style that adds balance instead of working against your natural features.
Oval Face Shape
An oval face is usually longer than it is wide, with balanced proportions and a softly rounded jawline. The forehead may be slightly wider than the jaw, but nothing looks overly sharp or exaggerated.
Oval faces are the most versatile when it comes to beard styles. Most lengths and shapes work well, as long as the beard is kept clean, even and well-maintained.
Round Face Shape
A round face usually has similar width and length, with softer angles around the cheeks and jaw. The cheekbones are often one of the widest points, and the jawline is less defined.
For round faces, the goal is usually to add structure and length. A beard can help sharpen the lower face and create a stronger jawline.
Square Face Shape
A square face has a strong jaw, broad forehead and fairly even width across the forehead, cheekbones and jaw. The jawline is usually the standout feature.
Square faces already have strong structure, so the right beard should refine it rather than make the face look too blocky. Controlled edges and balanced length work best.
Oblong or Rectangle Face Shape
An oblong or rectangle face is longer than it is wide. The forehead, cheekbones and jaw are often similar in width, but the face length is the dominant measurement.
For oblong faces, the aim is to avoid adding too much extra length at the chin. A beard with some controlled width at the sides can help balance the face.
Heart Face Shape
A heart-shaped face is wider at the forehead and cheekbones, then narrows towards the chin. The chin may look more pointed or less prominent compared with the upper face.
For heart-shaped faces, beard styles should add strength and fullness around the jaw and chin. This helps balance the lower face with the wider upper face.
Diamond Face Shape
A diamond face is usually widest at the cheekbones, with a narrower forehead and jaw. The chin may appear sharper or more defined.
For diamond faces, the goal is to soften sharp angles and avoid making the chin look too narrow. A beard with controlled fullness around the jaw can create better balance.
Triangle or Pear Face Shape
A triangle or pear-shaped face has a wider jawline and a narrower forehead. The lower face carries more weight and structure than the upper face.
For triangle faces, the beard should be kept controlled around the jaw. Too much bulk at the bottom can make the face look heavier, so shape and maintenance matter.
Best Beard Styles for Each Face Shape
Once you know your face shape, choosing a beard becomes much easier. The right beard style can sharpen weak areas, soften strong angles, add length, reduce width or bring more balance to your overall look.
This does not mean every man with the same face shape needs the same beard. Beard density, patchiness, hair growth direction, personal style and maintenance level all matter. But your face shape gives you a solid starting point.
A good beard should do three things:
It should balance your face, not exaggerate the wrong areas.
It should work with your natural growth, not fight it every morning.
It should fit your grooming routine, whether you prefer short stubble, a shaped beard or a fuller style.
Use the table below as a practical guide.
| Face Shape | Beard Styles | Pros to Face Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Oval | Short boxed beard, full beard, designer stubble, medium-length beard, moustache with beard | Most versatile face shape. Works with short, medium and fuller beard styles. Easy to balance as long as the beard is kept tidy. |
| Round | Goatee, anchor beard, extended goatee, short sides with longer chin, boxed beard with tapered cheeks | Adds length and structure. Helps make the face look sharper, slimmer and more defined. |
| Square | Short boxed beard, heavy stubble, circle beard, faded beard, controlled full beard | Strong natural jawline. Beard styles can enhance masculine angles while keeping the face clean and structured. |
| Oblong / Rectangle | Short beard, full beard with fuller sides, stubble, beardstache, shorter chin beard | Strong face length gives a mature, defined look. Fuller sides can add balance and stop the face looking too long. |
| Heart | Full goatee, short full beard, chin beard, boxed beard, beard with lower-face fullness | Beard growth can strengthen the chin and jaw area. Helps balance a wider forehead with a narrower lower face. |
| Diamond | Rounded beard, short boxed beard, chin strap with fullness, full beard with shaped jawline | Strong cheekbones create a sharp, distinctive look. A controlled beard can soften the chin and add width to the jaw. |
| Triangle / Pear | Short boxed beard, heavy stubble, neat full beard, faded beard, shorter sides | Naturally strong jawline. A tidy beard can sharpen the lower face without making the jaw look too wide or bulky. |
